Enjoy a journey to colorful star clusters imaged by the Webb and Hubble space telescopes, including a high resolution image of the Cosmic Cliffs, a star forming region and one of Webb’s first images that captures dust clouds as they are coalescing into newborn stars.

This journey becomes more remarkable when it’s possible to zoom so far into the hauntingly beautiful images.

To obtain colorful images, astronomers take multiple images through different filters. Each filter selects a specific wavelength of light emitted by a particular gas; separate images are taken with each filter. Next, they assigned the color yellow to hydrogen, red to sulfur, and blue to oxygen, etc and combine the images into one, resulting in the eye-popping final images.

When it comes to choosing which filters to use and which colors to assign them, the guiding principle is to reveal an object’s details as clearly as possible, depending on the desired science. It’s nature's color palette; we just gave it a little help by assigning colors to specific molecules in space.

Look for the tiny but glorious, perfectly spiral galaxies that appear in the last image, NGC 456/460. Specks of brightly colored pixels peeking through a sea of glittering stars floating in the blackness of space.
