Event Recording of “Breaking the Silence: From Guantánamo to ICE - Mohamedou Ould Slahi and the Future of Human Rights in U.S. Immigration Detention Centers”

On May 22, 2025, students at the Geneva Graduate Institute (IHEID) organised an academic panel with Mohamedou Ould Slahi and Don Edward Walicek on the continuity of rights violations in U.S. detention centers such as Guantánamo Bay. This conference was organised by Master’s student Ginevra Angioni, the Human Rights, Conflict, and Peace Initiative (HRCP), and the Graduate Institute Student Association (GISA).

Mohamedou Ould Slahi, former Guantánamo Bay detainee and author of Guantánamo Diary, shared his powerful lived experience in person and Dr. Don Edward Walicek, professor and researcher on Guantánamo Bay, joined us online with critical insights into carceral systems and their colonial legacies. Additionally, former Guantánamo Bay detainee and artist Sabri al-Qurashi gave a special message about the powerful meaning of art in his life.
