Film is in three sections: 1) [00:33-05:47] ‘Mary Blandy’: a ghost story set in contemporary Henley Regatta. Actors putting on a play about Blandy in Kenton Theatre are disturbed by a mysterious woman wandering the theatre - Blandy murdered her father when he refused her permission to marry; she was hanged and became local ghost legend. 2) [05:47-11:08] ‘Lady Hoby’: filmed in/around Bisham Abbey, this tells the story of Lady Hoby, who locked her son in the attic and forgot about him while on a trip to London. 3) [11:09-16:00] ‘The Warlock’: a folk-horror story filmed in Burnham Beeches. Robed figures walk through /past trees and bushes. The Warlock (dressed in white) takes poison – which is revealed to be weed killer, and that this is all happening in the modern day rather than a historical period.
Although in black-and-white it mirrors the approach to historical drama-documentary seen in John Hampden and Hellfire Francis. Interesting black-and-white cinematography, strong on shadows (particularly in Lady Hoby)
The film’s production featured in Movie Maker in 1975, with a focus on pictures from production of the ‘Lady Hoby’ and ‘Mary Blandy’ segments. The film would be awarded a 4* 16mm rating in the 1976 Ten Best competition. (‘The Star Ratings’, MM July 1976, p.474)
