Описание к видео The Urban Landscape of NYC's Parks

An ecosystem is a community of living things interacting with one another and with their physical environment. Across New York City’s five boroughs, you’ll find a surprising variety of ecosystems thriving in the urban landscape — from grassy meadows and towering forests to salt marshes and lakes.

Its forests are layered with diverse species of trees, each providing a unique home for different plants and animals. Grasslands, as their name suggests, are open areas dominated by grasses and wildflowers, with few trees. Though rarer in NYC than forests or wetlands, these grasslands still play a vital role — offering habitat for wildlife and valuable ecosystem services for people.

Wetlands — including ponds, swamps, and salt marshes — are areas that are permanently or seasonally flooded. They’re great places to spot fascinating plants and animals that thrive in and around water. And don’t forget the city’s more unexpected green spaces — like the rooftop farms on Randall’s Island, where fruits and vegetables are grown high above the streets!

Presenter Michael Rosenthal, is an environmental and conservation professional with extensive experience in both research and teaching within higher education. He is skilled in conservation issues and the statistical analysis and modeling of wildlife populations. Rosenthal earned a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources from Cornell University and a Master of Science in Conservation Biology from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He joined Natural Resources Group of NYC Parks after several years as a forester.
