Earth's horizontal magnetic field in our teaching laboratory is measured by comparing its action on a suspended bar magnet to the effect of a field within a pair Helmholtz coils.

This video shows the oscillation of a suspended small magnet in a static field that is the sum of the Helmholtz coil field and Earth's field. You can measure the frequency of the oscillation for different coil fields and from that data find the field of the Earth when there is no Helmholtz reference present.
