Today, Jake and I are chasing early spring trout in the Driftless Area of Southwest Wisconsin. We’re exploring a brand-new creek neither of us has ever fished before, and with snowmelt runoff and cold water temps, it’s shaping up to be a classic hit-or-miss spring day.

We kick things off with some streamer action, navigating through brush and tight tree cover—what we like to call “super skillful angling.” It doesn’t take long for the chaos to start: missed hooksets, fish lost at the net, streamers older than dirt, and a whole lot of rusty technique. But the good stuff starts coming together, and soon we’re getting into some beautiful brown trout.

Along the way, we crack jokes, stumble over fallen branches, switch up flies (including a Perdigon, Copper John, and some nymphs), and eventually stumble into some dry fly action at our third and final spot of the day. With the sun high and water levels tricky, it’s not exactly an easy outing—but that’s what makes it memorable.
