One of Australia’s top surfing beaches, Maroubra is best enjoyed outdoors. An official National Surfing Reserve, the spectacular 1km-long beach is wrapped by a rocky headland, natural bushland and expansive green parks, perfect for picnics and walking adventures.

Things to do
Maroubra is famous for its consistent waves, with surfers carving up the waves from dawn. A decent swell brings several beach breaks to life, while the reef at the southern end of the beach creates a premium wave. You can learn to surf with Let’s Go Surfing Maroubra. As with all Sydney beaches, the best place to swim is between the red and yellow flags.

At the southern end of the beach, you can pick up the Eastern Beaches Coastal Walkway through the rugged Malabar Headland National Park to Malabar Beach. This spectacular walk offers incredible coastal views and includes the Western Escarpment walking track. During the annual whale migration between May and November, you can even spot humpback whales playfully breaching out of the water.

Arthur Byrne Reserve, adjacent to the beach, is a large, grassed park, with barbecue facilities and picnic tables. The park also has a shaded kids’ playground, impressive skate park and free outdoor gym. Jack Vanny Reserve is on the northern headland. Follow the steps down to delightful Mahon Pool, a popular rock pool where you can swim in a spectacular setting.

Eat & drink
Across the road from the beach, the beautifully-restored The Bay Hotel & Diner, built in the 1920s, serves up great pub fare and is family-friendly, with a separate children’s play area. There’s also the Maroubra Seals for a relaxed bistro-style meal. The Pavilion Beachfront is located on the beach promenade itself, offering an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, along with premium ocean views.

Stroll along Marine Parade and McKeon Street for casual dining options, such as The North End Cafe, Chalk Espresso Cafe and Pool Cafe. There are more options at nearby shopping centres Pacific Square and Maroubra Junction. Head to Golden Unicorn for some of the best yum cha outside of Chinatown and Kokoroya for modern Japanese food.

Getting there
Getting to Maroubra, just south of Coogee, is easy by public transport. There are buses from Central and Museum train stations in the city centre that will get you there in about half an hour, taking you through inner city Surry Hills and past Randwick. If you’re feeling energetic, it’s a two-hour walk from glamorous Bondi Beach, along the stunning coastline.
