WWE Unforgiven 2005: Edge vs Matt Hardy (SmackDown vs RAW 2007)

Before Matt Hardy was captivating audiences with his "Broken" persona, there was a time where the future of Matt's career was in serious doubt. For six years, Matt had been in a serious relationship with Lita, one of the greatest Women's Champions in WWE history. Both on and off the screen, these two seemed to be the perfect match, and that their relationship was here to stay.

Unfortunately for Matt Hardy, he would be out of action following a knee injury in the later half of 2004. During that time, Lita began seeing Edge, and eventually Matt found out about the affair. When he went public with the information, WWE chose to release him, while Edge and Lita were paired onscreen and began their incredible run.

Due to the massive fan outcry when Matt Hardy was released (and the fact that Edge and Lita couldn't stop hearing about the issue), it was decided to transfer this real feud onto WWE television. On the July 11, 2005 episode of Monday Night RAW, Matt attacked Edge backstage in a moment that blurred fiction and reality. An attack in the ring soon followed, and Matt Hardy made it clear that he sought revenge on the two people who had ruined his life.

A few weeks later, Edge and Matt Hardy met inside the squared circle at SummerSlam. The contest was a chaotic brawl, eventually being stopped by the referee when Matt became a bloodied heap. Due to the controversy surrounding the ending, a street fight took place on Monday Night RAW a short time later, with this match ending with Edge and Matt Hardy crashing off the stage.

Unwilling to stop the feud at this point, the two rivals met yet again at WWE Unforgiven 2005. Inside the confines of a steel cage, Edge and Matt Hardy would go to hell and back in the name of proclaiming themselves as the superior wrestler.
