US Presidential Medal of Freedom: Lawyer for MLK among 19 Americans honoured by Biden | FULL

U.S. President Joe Biden presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honour, to 19 Americans on Friday, including Nancy Pelosi, former House Speaker; Clarence B. Jones, a lawyer who provided legal counsel to Martin Luther King Jr.; and Katie Ledecky, the most decorated female swimmer in history.

Also among the honourees was former vice-president Al Gore, Academy Award winner Michelle Yeoh and late civil rights leader Medgar Evers.

The 10 men and nine women honoured hailed from the worlds of politics, sports, entertainment, civil rights, LGBTQ+ advocacy, science and religion. Three medals were awarded posthumously.

Before calling this year’s recipients up onto the stage, Biden described each honouree as people with “relentless curiosity, ingenuity and hope.”
