"My company does a lot of climbing work, so we access the trees with rope. Last night I was in a magnolia tree that had some branches on top of a bank and you know before that I'm making sure that there's no you know no broken branches in the line where I'm going to be clearing up and if there are when I get up there I'm gonna secure them lower them down as safely as possible. I'd say if you're not an experienced tree guy, please don't go out and buy a harness and from Home Depot, it's not worth the risk."

STORYLINE:
Thousands of people are without power in Nashville, after a severe ice storm hit the area and many of these outages were caused by trees falling on power lines and poles.

As the city attempts to restore power, arborists are out working to help assess damage from trees broken, split or hanging over property, roads and vehicles.

Keenan Baird, an ISA board certified master arborist with his company Greenroots LLC, said his team has been out assessing the biggest problems that they can address quickly to prevent further damage.

"Monday, we got a tree off of an assisted living facility in Hendersonville that had fallen onto the corner of the roof, damaged the building," said Baird on Wednesday. "We want to make sure when we're going out, assessing work that we're triaging it, just like when you go to the hospital with an injury."

He said ice storms can cause massive damage to trees that is different than a windstorm or a tornado, because their branches act like levers on the trunk.

"Water weighs eight pounds a gallon," said Baird. "And the trees just simply aren't used to that amount of weight. And you got all of that on those lever arms."
