Grand party event sought to project Palaniswami as the successor of Jayalalithaa

Thirty years after his death, MGR continues to be a crowd-puller across the State, and especially in Madurai. His birth centenary celebration, which got off to a start here on Friday, was no exception. By ensuring the participation of thousands of party cadres, public and students, AIADMK (Amma) and the district administration made the government-organised celebration a grand event.

Besides demonstrating the strength of the ruling faction and the support it enjoyed among MGR followers, the event also projected Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami as the successor of two towering personalities — MGR and Jayalalithaa.

The reception accorded to him, the high point of the celebration, was typically reserved for the two leaders. His convoy, which started at the airport a little past 11 a.m., took nearly three hours to cover a distance of about 20 km to reach the Circuit House as he was accorded a reception in at least 12 places by party cadre who had gathered in considerable numbers along the road side.

The Chief Minister got out of his vehicle in all these places to accept the reception. He took pictures and even selfies in many places with the cadre. Performances of folk and other traditional art forms were organised at several points en route.

A number of school students were made to wait for a few hours in a couple of places to welcome the Chief Minister.

On his way from the airport, Mr. Palaniswami unveiled a portrait of MGR and inaugurated a photo exhibition showcasing the glimpses of the AIADMK founder’s life at Amma Thidal, the venue of the celebration.

Apart from the gathering of party members, thousands of students from a number of colleges in Madurai district and beneficiaries of welfare schemes of various departments were brought in large numbers to the venue in the later half of the day. The participants had to wait for long outside the venue as everyone was subjected to security check at the entrance.

The celebration in the afternoon began with the playing of popular numbers from MGR’s films by a music troupe, which enthralled the gathering, followed by a debate and yoga and Bharatanatyam performance by school students.

Inheriting the legacy

The entire celebration also marked an effort to position Mr. Palaniswami as the successor of MGR and late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Apart from the grand welcome accorded to him, this was particularly visible in a video presentation screened at the venue.

The video, which began with montages showing the popularity enjoyed by MGR, subsequently switched to the achievements of Jayalalithaa and later showed how Mr. Palaniswami was taking forward their legacy.

Banners had also been erected in many places across the district with just the images of MGR, Jayalalithaa and Mr. Palaniswami prominently.

Almost all the Ministers of Tamil Nadu Cabinet were present at the function, along with Assembly Speaker P. Dhanapal, Deputy Speaker of Lok Sabha M. Thambidurai and many MLAs, including Thanga Tamilselvan, a supporter of T.T.V. Dhinakaran.
