Matchday Madness.

Everywere in Holland, Europe and worldwide you will find your hooligan and ultragroups. Groups that live an alternative lifestyle and have their own way of supporting their city and their club. What makes all these groups thick? At certain clubs you will find your oldskool hooliganism. Going to every match, home and away. Looking for the other group before, after and during the match. A confrontation with the law is something that comes looking around the corner every now and then.

The Ultrascene is different. These lads look at the ultra-way of life as a lifestyle. Politics are more important to these groups, left winged or right. Around the atmosphere the ultras use allot of pyro and other forms of fireworks.

But if you go back to the base these two cultures of football fans are not that much different from each other. Defending the honor and pride of their city and club. Being prepared to take that extra step, ignoring the fact that you can get heavily wounded or get locked up for a long time. These groups are seen as black sheeps, not walking with the flock but going against the tide, the rules the government lay upon them, rules that control the flock. The life of the hooligans and Ultras are beyond football alone, it’s a subculture witch is a difficult one to get out of ones you’re in. A brotherhood that lives, laughs and cries with eachother. In some way the life you suppose to lead. You have to if you don’t want to be a total outcast. (But at the same time the fight it were the can.)

The games and the atmosphere around them is something that we live for. The rumors on the way to a high profile match. The day before the match where an opponent always can make a show and the atmosphere during matchday. This phenomena is something Yoeri Kievits is going to investigate at clubs worldwide. Together with filmmaker and photographer Brandon Baan they will interview the leaders and capo’s of the firms around the world. Where did it all started? Who are their main rivals? How big are they and what are their political preferences?. During the weekend of our stay there will be a big interview, there will be pictures taken and some movies will be shot. Every 6 to 8 weeks the Matchday Madness magazine will be released. It will be sold online and at some stadiums around Europe. The magazine will always be in Dutch, English and the language of the country the club comes from.
