In 1519 Panama City (Ciudad de Panamá in Spanish 2024) was founded by the Spanish and in 1671 the historic city was completely destroyed by a fire. Most of the Native American silver and gold was shipped to Spain from Panama City. It was an important trade route. The city became very rich. Two years later the city was reestablished.

Panama is world known for the Panama Canal which connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific. Moreover, many Greek shipping companies are registered in Panama and there is a significant Greek Community in Panama. The first settlers came as laborers for the Panama Canal. Decades later many Greek seamen would stay in the magnificent city. Panama City has a population of 900,000 and approximately 1.5 million in the broader metropolitan region. Today Panama City is an important financial, industrial and shipping hub. Furthermore, it is the entry point of tourism in Panama. Some highlights are: the Panama Canal, the Bridge of the Americas, the bovedas, Casco Viejo of Panama (spanish for "old quarter") and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Panama.
