Based in Aberdeen, Grampian Television was founded as the ITV franchise for the North of Scotland in 1960. Grampian went on the air on 30 September 1961. It was bought by the parent company of STV - the Channel 3 broadcaster in Central Scotland - in 1997. The name Grampian Television was retired in 2006 and the station is now known on-air simply as STV.
