The BRICS grouping has expanded to include six new countries: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Iran, Argentina, Egypt, and Ethiopia. While this expansion is expected to enhance the interests of the Global South, it poses significant challenges for India. It diminishes India's position within the group while amplifying China's clout due to its existing strong relations with new members. Iran and Russia are heavily dependent on China as Western sanctions persist. China's influence in the Middle East will grow as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE join BRICS. This could potentially lead to a shift in the priorities of the bloc in favor of China. Moreover, China's push towards de-dollarization and the solidification of an anti-Western bloc may complicate India's diplomatic balancing act with the West. China's expanding presence in South America and Africa will be another pain point. All this will present challenges for India in maintaining a delicate equilibrium between its relationship with Russia, its strategic rivalry with China, and its influence in an alliance that now predominantly favors China.
