The liver is the only organ in the body that regenerates and it can withstand a lot of damage. Cirrhosis is also called end-stage liver disease and it is irreversible. In this condition we get the scarring of the liver, which disrupts blood flow through it, leading to a consequent high blood pressure in the portal vein (portal hypertension).
In this video we understand the pathophysiology of cirrhosis and the consequences that come with it:
Loss of albumin
Loss of clotting factors
Hypoglycemia
Hepatic encephalopathy and asterixis
Jaundice
Fat malabsorption
Increased oestrogen levels (leading to palmar erythema and spider naevi)
Portal hypertension

We then focus on portal hypertension and the consequences that come with it:
Ascites (and spontaneous bacterial peritonitis)
Varices (oesophageal, gastric, caput medusae, anorectal)
Splenomegaly
