Target Audience: Children’s National Registered Nurses

Objectives:

1. Identify the four components of the “Lethal Diamond of Death”— hypothermia, acidosis, coagulopathy, and hypocalcemia—and explain how each physiologic derangement impacts trauma outcomes, particularly in pediatric patients.

2. Describe the pathophysiology and clinical implications of each component of the lethal diamond, including their interdependent effects on metabolism, coagulation, and perfusion in the trauma setting.

3. Apply evidence-based strategies for early recognition and correction of hypothermia, acidosis, coagulopathy, and hypocalcemia during trauma resuscitation, with a focus on pediatric considerations and the importance of goal-directed therapy.
