Описание к видео Traditional Fishing Village near Amsterdam – Marken Walking Tour 4K

Marken is a charming Dutch peninsula village near Amsterdam, famous for its colorful wooden houses, quiet canals, and fishing heritage. Once an island, it feels timeless, with narrow streets, traditional costumes, and peaceful views over the Markermeer.

In this video, we explore this friendly village, on an immersive 4k walking tour with ambient sound.

We start our trip at the edge of the old town, passing the beautiful Beatrixbrug (named after Queen Beatrix), and visit the wooden shoe factory. Passing through beautiful narrow alleys, past traditional homes and gardens, we reach the town’s harbor, now the main focal point for tourists. We visit some of the small ‘kijkhuisjes’ here (classic houses), admire the port (now mostly used for recreational boats), and see people enjoying food and drinks in attractive restaurants.

We also take a look at two important monuments, one for a devastating flood in 1916, and the other for a military plane crash in WWII. And we stroll through residential neighborhoods that are a bit more modern.

Information about Marken as a travel destination
Marken is a charming former island on the Markermeer, just northeast of Amsterdam, celebrated for its colorful wooden houses, quiet streets, and deep-rooted maritime traditions. For centuries, Marken stood isolated from the mainland, accessible only by boat. This separation shaped a close-knit community that depended on fishing, sailing, and trade, while constantly contending with the unpredictable waters of the Zuiderzee.

Life on Marken was strongly influenced by flooding. Repeated water disasters forced residents to build their homes on raised mounds and develop unique wooden architecture designed to withstand harsh conditions. These struggles eventually led to major Dutch water-management projects, including the Afsluitdijk, which transformed the dangerous saltwater sea into the calmer freshwater Markermeer, changing Marken’s way of life forever.

Today, visitors can wander along narrow lanes and small bridges connecting Marken’s distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character. The harbor remains a focal point, reflecting the village’s fishing heritage, while the iconic Paard van Marken lighthouse stands as a symbol of guidance and endurance. Monuments around the village commemorate both devastating floods and a WWII plane crash, reminding visitors of the human stories behind Marken’s peaceful appearance.

Although traditional clothing is no longer worn daily, it remains an important part of Marken’s cultural identity and can be seen during festivals and in local museums. Now connected to the mainland by a causeway, Marken offers tourists a rare glimpse into historic island life, where water, resilience, and tradition continue to define this uniquely Dutch village.
