The protectionist measures added to the disaster of two world wars meant even more poverty. The positive side was that it led to the appearance of a world consciousness of the need of economic cooperation. Thus the UN, the Wold Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organisation were born.

World War II left behind a divided world: the capitalist system in one side and the communist system in the other side. The representation of the communist system collapse was the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.

The diagrams develop the birth and development of the European Union and the different ways of integration among countries.
