Calculations Explained:
All calculations in tonnes/ metric tons NOT imperial tons. All data has been based on US averages. Tesla emissions have been calculated to worse case scenario ie. largest battery.

The production of a Lithium Iron battery varies depending on the size and car. The average estimate for a Tesla is 11-15 tonnes, let's assume that 15 tonnes is their largest battery, being the 100kWh battery (Model X and Model S).

During my research to discover how much CO2 a combustion vehicle produces during manufacturing was all over the shop, some claiming as little as 0.5 tonnes all the way to 20 tonnes! The most common range was 6-10 tonnes, but 7 was the most common figure stated by several trusted automotive sources.

EPA's US Average state "A typical passenger vehicle emits about 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year" and "...the average gasoline vehicle on the road today has a fuel economy of about 22.0 miles per gallon..."

To calculate the CO2 produced from charging a Tesla, you first need the amount of CO2 produced per kWh. The US average electricity source emissions are 0.429 kgs CO2 per kWh.

A Tesla 100kWh battery of course uses 100kWh. 0.429 x 100 = 42.9 kgs CO2 per full charge.
A full charge for a 100kWh battery is around 350 miles of range (314 mi for a Model X and 379 mi for a Model S).
An average driver does 12k miles per year. 12000 / 350 = 34.29 full charges a year.
So we can say 42.9 kgs CO2 x 34.29 charges = 1471.04 kgs per year or 1.5 tonnes per year rounded up.

We can do the same calculations for other Tesla battery sizes. The Model 3 as shown in this video has a 75kWh battery with 350 miles of range. But because this is battery is smaller, we can't easily assume what CO2 is produced in manufacturing, so lets work with a range of 11 - 15 tonnes produced.
1103.28 kgs CO2 per year = 1.1 tonnes per year
3 Years: 14.3 - 18.3 tonnes
5 Years: 16.5 - 20.5 tonnes
10 Years: 22 - 26 tonnes
