• What is a stye and why does it occur?
A stye, referred to as a hordeolum in medical terms, is a bacterial infection of one of the glands in the eye lids. There are 2 types of glands located in the eyelids: meibomian glands, glands of Zeis and Moll. There are normal bacteria that live on the surface of our eyelids and if some of that bacteria gets trapped inside these glands then it will sometimes cause the gland to become infected, resulting in a stye.

• What are typical symptoms that occur with a stye?
When you develop a stye you will get the tell-tale signs of infection: a red, swollen, tender and inflamed eyelid.

• Why would a warm compress help treat styes?
Most styes are self-limiting, which means that your body’s immune system is good at fighting off and dealing with this infection. Resolution of a stye often occurs in 7-14 days. There are some things that can sometimes help to resolve a stye faster. Hot compresses can be used for 10minutes 2-4 times per day can sometimes be helpful. This heat will increase the blood flood and circulation around the eye lids, which brings more immune factors to that area to help fight off the infection. Keep in mind this heat will cause the area to be more swollen. Other treatments include antibiotics: eye drops and ointments can be tried but they often don’t penetrate the skin very deep so it may not get to the active infection. Oral (pills) antibiotics are usually more effective at treating styes but one should have a conversation with their eye doctor about the benefits of this. Eyelid hygiene and cleaning can also helpful in preventing styes and sometimes in treating a stye. Ask your eye doctor on which eyelid cleaning product would be recommended.
