[TRANSCRIPT] There are a couple things you should know when you encounter the police, especially if you're about to be arrested. Please know that you don't have to give the police any statements about what they're asking you about. So, all you really need to do is give them your name and address, but you should tell them that you want to speak to a lawyer before you talk to them about whatever the arrest is about. Please also know that they can't search your house separately without a warrant. And so, if they ask you for consent to search, you should say "No, I'm not going to give you consent to search."
The constitution gives you these rights to protect yourself and your family, and you should use these rights. If there are locked compartments in your car, like your glove box is locked or your trunk is locked, you do not have to give permission for the police to search those. They can either get a warrant or not. But you should not give them permission to search either your trunk or your glove box, or anything that's locked in your car. But please know, if you are actually arrested, your person can be searched. So, police have a right to empty your pockets, go through your wallet, and your jacket, that sort of thing. The police have a right to do that. My advice is always is to comply if they're searching your person, but if they ask you for permission tell them "no, I don't want you to search my car, I don't want you to search my house without the proper paperwork."
If you get arrested, you should call a lawyer as soon as possible. There are issues relating to bail, there are issues relating to whether or not you're going to be able to see your family again soon. So you want to get a lawyer on your case as soon as possible. With over 30 years experience, I've handled a number of bail hearings and getting someone out of jail makes all the difference in defending them in their case. If somebody is arrested, my first concern is getting that person out of jail. So you should hire a lawyer who understands the mechanisms and the procedures of getting a bond or bail hearing wherever you are. Because being out of jail to help defend your case makes all the difference.
You should hire competent counsel as soon as possible, and that's usually before the bond hearing. Because you want your lawyer to gather the evidence and the facts to convince the judge that you're a good person to be on bond.
