Indian Economic Updates : China Prepares to Debut Massive Jiu Tian Drone Mothership with Swarm Warfare Capability

China is set to reveal its advanced drone mothership, the Jiu Tian, by late June 2025. Built by the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China, this jet-powered unmanned aerial vehicle features a 25-metre wingspan and a maximum takeoff weight of 16,000 kg. With the ability to carry up to six tonnes of payload, it is designed to deploy nearly 100 smaller drones, including kamikaze UAVs and loitering munitions.

Designed for high-altitude operations, Jiu Tian can cruise at elevations of up to 15,000 metres (50,000 feet) and has a range of about 7,000 kilometres (4,350 miles), allowing it to function beyond the reach of most medium-range air defence systems. Its modular payload system enables quick reconfiguration for multiple roles such as combat missions, border surveillance, maritime patrols, disaster relief, and public safety operations.

While Chinese state media have described Jiu Tian as a major leap in UAV technology, defence analysts warn that its large size and lack of stealth characteristics could leave it exposed to advanced air defence networks. Even so, the drone mothership highlights China’s rapidly expanding capabilities in drone-centric warfare.
