Phoenix Rising: Ashes To Ashes is a spiritually stirring short film and directorial debut for former member of the artivist group TRIIIBE. This film transcends the norm by incorporating story telling techniques through sound, movement , fashion , and casting all with deep intention. With the assistance and wisdom of Christian Vetter as Director of Photography , and both of our dedication to making meaningful art , this short film has done exactly what we both intended ; This film has risen from the ashes.

This film , to me, took an entire lifetime to create. Without any formal background in filmmaking , but a relentless need to express my experience, I took on the challenge to learn how to navigate Adobe software to make my visions come to life. I started this process of hurting and healing at the top of the year in January and since then it’s been a long and winding road toward this moment.
When first recording the music itself , it was a moment of revelation as I freestyle rapped over a beat that musician and friend of mine, Chase Watkins, played after a recording session for my upcoming debut album Bare Soul.

I completely freestyled the last portion of the song , and it makes sense that the last moments of the film are also organic and spontaneous in their creation as well. From visuals to the music “True, Love ? (Reprise)” (unreleased music from the Bare Soul album) featuring Josh Jessen on the keys, to the Rose-burning ritual at the end.

My hope is to create space for black and brown members of the LGBTQA+ community to express genuine emotion , express love, to dance and smile and frown and be free and angry and joyful all in a beautiful way. A lot of us experience heartbreak and don’t have anyway to safely express it. I am eternally grateful to be able to transmute my pain , my love , my joy , my sorrow into something timeless.
