Writers-Producers-Directors Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos spent a decade researching thousands of primary source materials and shooting and editing over 1,000 hours of footage to craft Making a Murderer, Netflix’s 10-part documentary series about Steven Avery, a Wisconsin DNA exoneree who two years after his release, while pursuing a $36 million wrongful conviction lawsuit, is charged with the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. The directors, graduate film students in 2005 when Steven Avery’s case splashed across national headlines, borrowed a camera and hit the road for Manitowoc County, Wisconsin to examine the evolution of the American criminal justice system from Avery's wrongful conviction through the investigation and prosecution of this new case. Ten years later, their series was complete. Join them for an inside look at their experiences in making the series, the craft of their filmmaking, and the themes woven throughout this fascinating story.
