Senate Majority leader Harry Reid Tuesday urged President Barack Obama to 'go big' as the president weighs executive action on immigration reform.
The president has pledged to announce measures before year's end.
Senator Reid also insisted any move by President Obama on immigration should not prevent Republican Senate and House leaders from cooperating on outstanding government funding issues.
Obama's plans to move forward with executive actions on immigration could potentially could shield from deportation about 5 million immigrants who are living in the United States illegally.
That group includes parents of U.S. citizens and those young immigrants already protected from deportation.
Two years ago, Obama launched the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program that lets young immigrants who came to the U.S. as children stay in the country without fear of deportation for two years.
So far, more than 610,000 have benefited from that program.
