Tales of the World: Narikiri Dungeon 3 is a crossover tactical RPG and the third installment in the Narikiri Dungeon series, serving as the fourteenth entry in the overall Tales franchise. The game was designed by Shoji Masuda, renowned for his work on Ore no Shikabane wo Koete Yuke and Gunparade March. Set in the town of Minakuru, the story follows orphans Julio Sven and Caro Orange who live at the Asunaro orphanage and passionately read Tales legends before bed each night. When Dr. Brown discovers an ancient time-traveling machine called a Timeship in the Remi ruins, the duo names it "Dream Ship" and plans to visit the legendary heroes. However, Julio notices one legend has changed—the hero arrives too late and the world is destroyed. That same night, the Timeship is stolen by two thieves named Ponnie and Clyte. When a second Timeship appears piloted by Dr. White (Dr. Brown from 100 days in the future), he reveals the thieves have been traveling through time causing havoc in various Tales worlds and altering history. Armed with Narikiri clothes discovered deep within the ruins, Julio and Caro embark on a time-traveling quest to restore the corrupted legends and prevent catastrophic timeline changes.

The gameplay uniquely blends turn-based tactical strategy with real-time action combat using the Linear Motion Battle System. Battles unfold on grid-based maps where players control multiple three-character parties simultaneously, moving them chess-like across squares indicated by gray dots when within range and red when unreachable. When a party contacts an enemy, the game transitions to LMBS-style real-time combat where players chain normal attacks and special Artes into combos or unleash powerful magic spells. Players can recruit over 30 legendary heroes from five previous Tales games including Tales of Phantasia, Tales of Destiny, Tales of Eternia, Tales of Destiny 2, and Tales of Symphonia, assembling dream teams spanning the franchise's history. The signature Narikiri system allows Julio and Caro to don special costumes that grant them Artes, magic abilities, and the power to completely transform into any encountered hero or villain, enabling strategic class-switching mid-mission. The game includes the series' traditional cooking system where acquired ingredients prepare meals that restore HP or temporarily boost battle statistics, alongside standard RPG progression with leveling and stat increases across an adventure spanning multiple timelines and worlds.
