中大布匹市场的起源，可追溯到20世纪80年代末，那时候由海印桥桥底摆地摊卖毛线的“走鬼”，自发迁到中山大学南门对面，渐渐地形成了气候。由于地处中山大学校园附近，买卖的商品主要是布料，久而久之被周边居民职员叫中大布匹市场。

In 1987, the Guangzhou municipal government comprehensively rectified the city appearance and environment. Street stalls were not allowed at the bottom of Haiyin Bridge. Dozens of stall owners had to relocate. At that time, some people suggested moving to Jiangnan West Road. It was a suburban area at the time, so everyone decided to move closer to the CUHK campus. It is a barren place, surrounded by mountains and fishing ponds. There are not many people in the past, and business is very deserted. By the early 1990s, business had improved, and northern merchants began to purchase wool here, and the amount of purchases was increasing year by year. The operating environment was also moved from the street stalls to the iron sheds on both sides of Ruikang Road, and there was also an iron bed. Shelves, each booth is charged 100 yuan per month for industry and commerce. Although business was good, it was hard work.
