"In Miriam’s Wildflower Garden" was written and performed by Oak and Willow Year 3 Classes, Thomas Hickman School, Aylesbury.
The film was made by Herbie Clarke and sound production was by Herbie Clarke & Frances M Lynch. The project was commissioned by Sarah Dewberry, Head of Learning, Waddesdon Manor and electric voice theatre for the "Voices for the Future - Miriam Rothschild" project 2022 https://www.electricvoicetheatre.co.uk/

“Voices for the Future – MIRIAM ROTHSCHILD” is part of a UK wide initiative which aims to discover, honour, and promote female voices past and present and to inspire, guide and build diverse VOICES FOR THE FUTURE.

Miriam Rothschild is one of the voices from the past which is uniquely placed to do this, introducing children to the importance of entomology, its concepts, and relationship to ecology and conservation using music, poetry and art.

The project raises awareness of Miriam’s life and work and its importance to the future of ecology and the Rothschild family’s contributions to science in general including the horticultural work of Alice de Rothschild at Waddesdon Manor in contrast to the wild gardens of Miriam’s later life.

Miriam started collecting insects when she was only four, keeping them in matchboxes! She grew up to become an international authority on fleas, pioneered the restoration of wildflower meadows and the use of art therapy to help mental health, was a vegetarian, and campaigned for gay rights.

Her Uncle Walter collected butterflies which she loved, and he kept giant tortoises which he and the children would ride across his lawn. He is one of the few people to tame zebras and had a team pull his carriage which he used when visiting Buckingham Palace!

The children worked through zoom to create the music and drawings - coming together on a day visit to Waddesdon Manor in March 2022 to record the final song.
