Starting a fall garden doesn’t have to be complicated! In this video, I’m showing you step-by-step how I start my broccoli seeds for a thriving fall harvest. The secret is timing and preparation—I always start my seeds in late summer, even when it’s still hot outside. That way, my seedlings have plenty of time to mature before they’re ready to be transplanted into the fall garden.

I use large seedling trays so I don’t have to up-pot later—this saves time, reduces transplant shock, and gives the roots plenty of space to grow strong. My favorite trays are the Vego seedling trays with a built-in dome. The dome holds in moisture, which helps regulate humidity and makes germination much easier, especially during hot weather.

To cover the seeds, I use vermiculite instead of heavy potting mix. Vermiculite is light, fluffy, and lets the seedlings push through easily. Another trick I swear by is sifting your potting mix before planting. By removing big chunks of wood chips, you create a fine, smooth medium that improves seed-to-soil contact and leads to stronger germination.

Extra Tips for Success:
🌱 Start seeds in a bright but shaded spot outdoors (or under grow lights) so they don’t cook in direct summer sun.
🌱 Water from the bottom when possible—this keeps the soil evenly moist without washing seeds around.
🌱 Don’t overcrowd your trays; give seedlings room to grow sturdy stems.
🌱 Use a fan or gentle airflow to prevent damping-off disease and build strong plants.
🌱 Label everything! When you’re starting multiple varieties, it’s easy to lose track.

By the time cooler weather arrives, your seedlings will be strong, healthy, and ready to thrive in the fall garden.
