Welcome back MechanicaLEi, did you know that databases help model relevant aspects in reality like the data related to the availability of rooms in hotels? This makes us wonder, What is a database? Before we jump in check out the previous part of this series to learn about What Jigs and Fixtures are? Now, A database is an organized collection of data, generally stored and accessed electronically from a computer system. There are certain characteristics that define a database further: First, It Should be able to store all kinds of data that exists in this real world. Second, It should be able to relate the entities/tables in the database by means of a relation. Third, The application and Data stored by the application should be isolated. Forth, Multiple users should be able to access the same database with their respective permission levels, without affecting each other. A few examples of database applications include SQL, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Excess and ORACLE RDBMS.
A database system has many advantages over a file system. File System is a general, easy-to-use system for storage of general files which require less security and constraints. Database systems have more security and offer significantly less data inconsistency and Data Redundancy. Database System stores structured data which have well-defined constraints, interrelations and are highly centralized. Examples of File systems include the New Technology File System or NTFS used in windows and the extended file system or ext file system used in the Linux family. Hence, we first saw what a database is and then saw what the advantages of a database over a filesystem are?
