• The 4 o'clock plant scientifically known as Mirabilis jalapa, is native to tropical regions, including Pakistan.

• To cross-pollinate the yellow and red flowering varieties of Mirabilis jalapa, you can follow these steps:

a. Identify the flowers that you want to cross-pollinate. Choose a fully opened flower from the yellow variety as the female parent and a fully opened flower from the red variety as the male parent.

b. Emasculate the female flower by carefully removing the stamens (the male reproductive organs) using fingers or small scissors. This prevents self-pollination.

c. Collect pollen from the male flower by gently tapping the anthers (the pollen-bearing structures).

d. Transfer the collected pollen to the stigma (the female reproductive organ) of the emasculated flower.

e. After pollination, you can mark the flower with a tag or string to keep track of the cross-pollinated flowers.

f. Covering the flowers with plastic bags can help prevent unwanted pollination by insects and water.

Here's how you can do it:

I. Select a small, clear plastic bag that is large enough to cover the flower without pressing it.

II. Carefully place the plastic bag over the flower, ensuring that it completely covers the flower and is secured at the base to prevent insects from entering.

III. Make sure the plastic bag is not tightly sealed, as it still needs some airflow for the flower to breathe.

IV. Monitor the flowers regularly and remove the plastic bags once pollination has occurred or when the risk of unwanted pollination has passed.
