Today most blockchains are not used in real-world applications. They do not provide any benefit for the user of business. The use cases are limited to digital finance. They have created a close crypto ecosystem, which is a fragment. No adoption from companies or people has taken place.
The reasons are many. Most of them (around 80%) can be used as a coin only because they don’t have a virtual machine. Consequently, no smart contracts can be run on them. Other chains, which target smart contracts use (Decentralized apps) face a severe double problem: scalability and cost. High cost stems basically from the running cost of the chain, namely proof of work (electricity cost) and storage cost (blockchain is a replication mechanism with a high factor). Scalability is a problem that decentralization brings.
