At first, the attack is a shocking success. Some American units are surrounded. Communication breaks down. Roads are cut off. But something incredible happens next.

At Lanzerath Ridge, fewer than 25 Americans stop hundreds of enemy troops for an entire day. At St. Vith, mixed units build a last-minute defense that delays the enemy again and again. These brave stands slow the attack and buy precious time.

Then comes one of the darkest moments of the battle. Near Malmedy, captured American soldiers are killed. The news spreads fast. Instead of fear, it fills American troops with determination. From this point on, surrender is no longer an option.

The battle’s most famous moment happens in the town of Bastogne. Surrounded by enemy forces, cold, hungry, and running low on supplies, American paratroopers dig in. When asked to surrender, their commander gives a one-word answer that becomes legendary: “Nuts!”

Soon, the weather changes. The skies clear. Allied planes roar overhead, dropping supplies and attacking enemy tanks. At the same time, a fast-moving American army turns north and breaks through to Bastogne, ending the siege.
