“Smart” alternators are not actually smart. Its the vehicle ECU that is smart with a program for alternator control that reduces fuel consumption. This reduced fuel consumption is the basis of Euro 6 and now Euro 6.2 engines. These engines delay the activation of the alternator until the starter battery is depleted approx 30%. In doing so, there is no alternator load at startup and idle when the engine is least efficient. Less carbon from better fuel efficiency… Yeh! If you place a traditional DC to DC on these engines, they place a load on the alternator immediately and ruin the compliance of the vehicle to the standard. Victron Energy have as a minimum a delayed start timer to support the time for the vehicle to take off and gain speed. But what happens at traffic lights? The traditional DC to DC just keeps pulling the load, at full load and bingo - no 100% compliance, at best it’s partial. This isn’t true with Scotty. When stationary at startup or at the lights, the solar power is pouring into the start battery, delaying the alternator load even further.
