NBA prospect Brian Bowen learning his lessons as NBL rookie :

In another life Brian Bowen would be a big man on a US college campus.

The 19-year-old would be a much-hyped recruit, someone many of the locals know on sight, but instead he is playing with the Sydney Kings, just a frizzy-haired, string-bean trying to match it with hardened professionals.

But no matter which continent he is playing on, Bowen is a serious talent and someone who could well be a first-round pick in next year’s NBA Draft.

At 201 centimetres, the guard-forward possesses an accurate jump shot and some nifty athleticism and he was rated among the top college basketball recruits last year until an FBI investigation into illegal payments to family members saw him banned from playing in college this year.
He was committed to Louisville and then to South Carolina but the NCAA nixed both moves, so instead he took up an offer from the NBL and the Kings to become a professional and follow the path current Oklahoma City Thunder guard Terrance Ferguson walked with Adelaide 36ers the season before last.

Bowen is in Australia with his mother and father and that is helping him adjust to live in a new country but on the court he is learning some tough lessons.

The Kings have already played preseason games in Terrigal, Bendigo and Wantirna South and while such locations may lack glamour, they are giving Bowen priceless minutes.
Bowen is still building his confidence around the group but he has some keen supporters in NBA championship winner Andrew Bogut and star import Jerome Randle.
