TravelChain – AI-Powered Mobility Data Platform
Transportation planning in India faces a major challenge: lack of accurate, large-scale, real-time mobility data. Manual surveys are slow, costly, cover 5% of the population, and suffer recall bias, producing outdated insights. Scientists also struggle to integrate survey data into advanced tools like GIS or VISUM.
Solution: TravelChain is a cross-platform mobile app and scientist dashboard ecosystem that automatically captures citizens’ trips while ensuring privacy and minimal effort. Aggregated, anonymized data is provided to NATPAC scientists through an interactive dashboard for smarter, evidence-based transport policies.
Citizen-Facing App:
Automatic Trip Detection: GPS + accelerometer with on-device ML identifies trips and travel modes (walk, bus, auto, metro, train, car, cycle).
Minimal Effort: Users confirm or edit detected trips via simple nudges.
Companion Capture: Logs co-travelers using Bluetooth or quick toggles.
Privacy-First: Raw GPS stays on-device; only anonymized trip summaries sync.
Gamification: Trip diary, CO₂ savings tracker, SOS button, and badges encourage engagement.
Scientist Dashboard:
Provides aggregated insights: trip chains, mobility trends, mode share, companion data.
Visualizations include heatmaps, charts, and export-ready data for GIS and transport modeling.
Technology:
Mobile: Flutter, offline storage (Hive/SQLite), TensorFlow Lite for on-device ML.
Web: React + TailwindCSS.
Backend: FastAPI/Node.js APIs with JWT/OAuth2; PostgreSQL + PostGIS for geospatial queries, MongoDB for logs, Redis for caching.
Cloud Deployment: Docker + Kubernetes.
AI/ML Models: Travel mode detection, trip segmentation, companion matching, anomaly filtering.
Unique Features:
India-specific mode detection distinguishing autos, shared cabs, and metro.
Companion detection for families, coworkers, or friends.
Offline-first and low battery consumption with on-device ML.
Dual value: citizens get personal insights; scientists get structured, large-scale mobility data.
Impact:
Citizens: Personal trip diary, CO₂ awareness, SOS safety, health metrics.
Scientists/NATPAC: Real-time, large-scale mobility data, mode splits, companion insights.
Government: Evidence-driven policies, smarter infrastructure investment, and sustainable transport planning.
TravelChain transforms smartphones into mobility sensors, enabling scalable, privacy-conscious, citizen-centric transport planning. It modernizes India’s survey-based systems, delivering actionable insights for Kerala and serving as a model for the rest of India
