How high should the camera be?

How do you make sure your prospective client gets a positive first impression of you in your video? That has everything to do with how you are in the picture. And especially with how high up your camera is. In this one, I tell you how high that thing needs to be to make an excellent first impression on your future client.

Let me take this to an extreme: this makes a very different impression than this.
And I'm not talking about pretty or not pretty, I'll talk about that later.

This is about authority, and approachability. And it often goes wrong. Unintentionally. With every image you send a message, about how you see yourself, about how you want to be seen. With the height of your camera, you determine the first impression the viewer gets of you.

Fortunately it is very simple: if you keep the camera low, you make yourself bigger than your viewer. Nice to exude authority. Not so good for creating sympathy. But: you show that we should think you are important.

The other way up, so that camera up, makes you small. Your viewer is looking down on you. Those who fear criticism sometimes do so unconsciously. You generate some sympathy with this, but whether we listen to you remains to be seen. Probably not.

I myself prefer to choose position equal to that of my viewers. After all, we are both equally worthy. So I keep the camera at eye level. Then we are equally tall, equally important, and that way I can have a pleasant conversation with you. And you don't have to look at lower chins and nostrils. Kind of nice. Ready? No. Because why do you see this so often? Not because people like to make themselves small, but because the light falls better that way. Do you look just a little bit better. You can make very subtle use of that. And that is by keeping the camera not exactly at eye level but just 2 centimeters above it you are not giving up your equal position - but you look just a little bit better.

So: camera at eye level. And then 2 more centimeters higher. Then you a. are in a good position and b you look good. This works with a selfie stick, like I'm using now, and just as well if your phone or camera is on a tripod.
