What is an instance type?

When you launch an EC2 instance you have to select the instance type which you want to launch. Each type of instance offers different size of compute, memory, and storage features and capabilities. Based on these features, these instance types are grouped into different instance families. In all three associate level AWS certifications, you can find between 3 to 5 exam questions.

What are the five main instance families?

The five main instance families are: General purpose, Compute Optimized, Memory Optimized, Storage Optimized and GPU. In every instance family, there are current and previous generation instance types. For certification exam preparation, focus on the current generation instance types and won’t get questions from the previous generation.

What is the relationship between virtualization and instance types?

There are two types of virtualization: paravirtual (PV) or hardware virtual machine (HVM). Each instance type supports one or some time both of them. All current generation instance types support HVM and HVM provides better performance as well as network features like placement groups and enhanced networking. There might be an exam question regarding instance types and compatibility with virtualization types.

How storage options plays a role in selecting an instance type?

Be ready for multiple exam questions regarding vs EBS volumes. Some instance types support both EBS and instance store volumes, but others only support EBS volumes. The main difference between instance store and EBS is the life of stored data. EBS volumes persist independently from the running life of an instance, but you lose instance store data when you stop or terminate the instance. Also we have coved SSD backed instance store and EBS optimized volumes.

How the networking features play a role in selecting an instance type?

Some instance types support placement groups and enhanced networking. Placement groups enable low network latency, high network throughput, or both for your application. Enhanced networking provides higher bandwidth, higher packet per second (PPS) performance, and lower latencies between instances. So combination of placement groups and enhanced networking is an important exam topic and expect a question in the certification exam including solution architect and sysops.
