SOT, Vladimir Putin, Russian president (in Russian): "We had a serious discussion of the Syrian crisis. The CSTO member states agree that the only solution to the Syrian crisis is through peaceful political settlement. Any external application of force would be a crude violation of international law and, in the UN definition, an act of aggression. Such a scenario would inevitably result in further destabilisation in Syria and throughout the entire Middle East which could have negative implications for the area of responsibility of our organisation. We are thankful to our partners in the CSTO for backing Russia's peacemaking efforts in Syria, and for supporting the US-Russian proposal with regard to Syria's chemical weapons. It is very important that we use every opportunity to end the violence in Syria and launch a dialogue between the government and the opposition. That is the consolidated approach manifested in the joint statement on Syria by CSTO member states."

Russia: Political settlement only solution to Syrian crisis - Putin

The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, took part in a summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) in Sochi on Monday. The session opened with a declaration, that the chairmanship of the CSTO will be handed over from Kyrgyzstan to Russia in 2014.

Vladimir Putin commented on the most up-to-date focuses of the Treaty with regards to current instability in the Middle East and a solution for the current situation in Syria.

Putin said, "We had a serious discussion of the Syrian crisis. The CSTO member states agree that the only solution to the Syrian crisis is through peaceful political settlement.
