In May 2015 http://www.mybuilder.com/ launched a nationwide competition to look for Britain's Worst Garden and the prize was a £1,000 garden makeover with a landscape gardener. After nearly 300 entries and over 11,000 votes, we had a winner. Transforming an unkempt garden can make a real difference to a home, but for Nicola Machin it would transform a life. Her daughter, Ellie Mae, was born with cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, and epilepsy, and has been wheelchair-bound all her life.

As a single mother, it was impossible for her to dig up her garden alone and instead decided to try her luck entering MyBuilder’s ‘Win a Grand For Your Garden’ competition.

“The response was phenomenal, I didn’t expect to get that many votes, I was expecting something like 50 votes, 60 votes, not a 1,000 plus! Ellie can’t wait, she has been so excited to have a garden where she can go out and play ‘dirt’ as she calls it, to pot her flowers.”

In the space of a week the landscaper gardener Chris Gilbert from Gilberts Landscaping designed and built a simple garden that would be accessible for a child in a wheelchair. There were generous donation of materials from Hollybush Garden Centre and Travis Perkins. Ellie had gone from staring out the dining room window at a jungle, to playing and planting seeds in her new garden.
