Short video tour of Shumla Cave 3 (41VV115), high above the Rio Grande near Shumla, Texas - March 19, 2022 4:33 p.m. This cave is significant to Texas archaeology; it was first scientifically explored and excavated during the George C. Martin Expedition sent by the Witte Museum in San Antonio, Texas in the summer of 1933. Shumla Cave 3 is one of the original nine "Shumla Caves" explored during that expedition. Cave 3 was significant for the impressive array of artifacts recovered during the expedition, including several prehistoric burials dating to the Archaic Period. Features currently visible at the site include a huge midden deposit, significant talus, mortars, tool groove marks, smoke-stained walls and ceiling, and some remnant pictographs. A distinctive Texas projectile point type, the "Shumla," is a dart point style that was named after the Shumla Caves; the typesite for the point. My voice is a little slow and raspy in the video because I had [inadvertently] swallowed a fair amount of cave dust earlier in the day.
