See how a Pneumothorax develops in this animation!

Pneumothorax is a medical condition in which air gets around the lungs.
Notice how as air leaks from the lungs into the pleural space, the visceral and parietal pleuras (the thin membranes that envelop the lung) start to detach.
In this example, air is leaking from inside the lungs, possibly due to a bulla on the lung surface or an air fistula, making it a closed pneumothorax. Air could also be leaking from outside the chest wall due to penetrating chest trauma, for example.
This is a problem because the lungs depend on negative pressure around them to expand. As air accumulates around the affected lung, it progressively impairs its ability to expand. [...]
Notice how this example is also a tension pneumothorax, since air flows into the pleural space during inspiration, but does not flow outwards during expiration, progressively increasing the intrapleural pressure and compressing the lungs and the heart, which could lead to obstructive shock.
