The Ballad of Peter Pumpkinhead was written by Andy Partridge of the English rock band XTC for their 1992 album Nonsuch.

In 1994, the Canadian band Crash Test Dummies covered the song for the soundtrack to the film Dumb and Dumber. It was the first Crash Test Dummies single to feature Ellen Reid on vocals.
