Indian Economic Updates : India Embarks on AMCA Project to Develop Indigenous Stealth Aircraft

The Indian government has issued an Expression of Interest inviting domestic firms—public, private, or consortiums—to co-develop, prototype, test, and certify the 5th-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). With ₹15,000 crore allocated for prototype development, the project could scale to several lakh crore in full production.

Open to Indian bidders until 16 August 2025, the AMCA project demands full-spectrum aerospace capabilities. A pre-bid conference was held in July. The timeline targets a prototype by 2029, full development by 2034, and mass production by the mid-2030s.

Firms like HAL, Tata, Adani Defence, and L&T may compete under this new model. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh hailed the move as “bold and decisive,” supporting Make-in-India and addressing IAF’s declining fighter strength—currently at 31 squadrons versus the required 42, while China fields advanced J-20 jets.

The AMCA aims to avoid delays like those in the Tejas Mk1A programme, where engine and development setbacks stalled delivery of 83 jets ordered in 2021. As India seeks to restore air dominance, the AMCA marks a crucial step forward.
