Midges hatch consistently year-round, yet we often overlook them when other bugs start hatching.

In this week's episode of Untangled, I told two stories about different times of the year -- summer and winter -- when fish were keyed in on midges, but I thought they were eating other bugs.

In the second one, it was late winter in Montana when Alex and I stumbled onto what I thought was a great blue-winged olive mayfly hatch. The bugs were buzzing on the water, fish were rising, so I tied on a mayfly rig and got to fishing. For the next hour, the fish refused everything I had! It was infuriating. It wasn't until I stopped to watch and observe the water for a minute that I saw something -- midges!

Midges were hatching in little clusters, and THAT'S what the fish were eating! They were ignoring the bigger mayflies, in favor of the smaller midges. I'm not sure why, but that's what they decided to do. Once I tied on a midge rig, I got into fish pretty quick.

The moral of these two stories is that you shouldn't ever overlook how important midges are year-round!
