CAVAGRANDE DEL CASSIBILE - CARRUBELLA . Sicily

Cavagrande del Cassibile is a splendid nature reserve, located in the province of Syracuse, near the town of Avola. It is a real canyon, dug into the Hyblaean plateau, which offers hikers breathtaking views. Inside the quarry flows a small river, the Cassibile which, in its most popular part, forms a series of waterfalls and the famous lakes of Avola. This itinerary develops along the 'Carrubbella' hiking trail, also known as Timpa ca' tona. which, starting from near the Cavagrande viewpoint, allows you to reach the valley floor and admire some lakes. The Carrubbella trail, at present, is the only hiking trail officially declared open by the forestry. The other paths, including the 'Scala Cruci' path which leads to the Avola lakes, are closed for safety reasons. However, the Carrubbella itinerary is a valid alternative route to visit the reserve. The excursion consists of a trek of medium difficulty: there are no technically difficult points as you walk on an equipped path but the itinerary is constantly sloping.
