He was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his performance. Linebacker Fred Barr had 13 tackles, DB Bob Sanders had 11 tackles, and DB Benny Sapp had an interception and four pass break-ups.

The game was the final performance in Kinnick Stadium for 19 Hawkeye seniors. Members of the 1981 Hawkeye Big Ten Championship football team also witnessed the game. The group was celebrating the 20th anniversary of Iowa's trip to the 1982 Roe Bowl.
