I made this chess board with purple heart and maple wood. First I cut strips of wood 2 inches and glued them together with every other type of wood. Next I sent it through the planer to get the wood flat. Then I cut strips the opposite way the 2 inches. I ripped them in half to make double the amount of pieces. I glue the strips on a pieces of plywood. The reason I glued them to plywood was to help prevent wood movement. After the glue dried, I squared the chess board on my table saw sled. I put domino in the borders to help line it up. When the glue dried on the borders, I sent the full chess board though the drum sander. I sanded it more with my orbital sander. I routed a chamfer on the edges. I spray it with water to raise the grain before the final sanding. This helps it get a smooth finish and keeps it smooth when the furniture butter is applied. I burn my brand on the bottom. I give the board a final sand with 220 grit. To see if anyone reads this, simply comment "Purple" in the comments. I apply the furniture butter. This furniture butter is food safe, so it can be used on serving trays or pieces of wood that come in contact with food. I am happy the way this chess board turned out. Thank you for watching!
