Banedi Barir Durga Pujo || Rani Rasmonir Barir Durga Pujo
Rani Rashmoni was a famous philanthropist of 19th century ‘Calcutta’.
She was wife of Babu Raj Chandra Das of Janbazar, Kolkata
(present day Talbagan, behind New Market). Her father-in-law Pritram Marh Das
started the family Durga Pujo in1792 , which his son and daughter-in-law continued. Rani was
survived by three daughters (Padmamani, Kumari and Jagadamba. Karunamoyee had
died during Rani’s lifetime). After Rani’s death in 1861, the daughters took the Durga
Pujas to the portion of the two mansions allocated to them, on either side of SN Banerjee Rd.
The pujo at the residence of daughter Padmamani at 13 Rani Rashmoni Road (entry through
Free School Str. or Mirza Ghalib Str.) is said to be initiated by Rani herself. The uniqueness
of the idol is the skin colour of Goddess Durga. It is of the colour of molten gold.
This house was the courthouse of the family. In the second floor of the mansion,
opposite of the Thakurdalan, is the office room of Rani Rashmoni where she used to look into
the matters of the estate as well as listen to plights of common men.

Jagadamba and Mathurmohan Biswas had a son, Trailokyanath Biswas. Trailokyanath’s third
son was Brojogopal Biswas. Brojogopal’s daughter Labonyolata was married to Bijoy Krishna
Hazra. Now the Puja is organised by Hazra family. That is why it is also known as Hazra Barir
Pujo .

The pujo at the famous Rashmoni Bhaban at 18 Rani Rashmoni Road is organised by other
descendants of youngest daughter Jagadamba and Mathurmohan Biswas. Locals call is
Biswas Barir Pujo.

One branch of the family, i.e., daugher Kumari and her husband Pearymohan Choudhury shifted
to a portion of the mansion across the street at 18/3 S N Banerjee Rd. They organise their own pujo,
known as Choudhury Barir Pujo 9 (1884). Actualy this is portion of the same mansion
were the ancestral Durga Pujo started by Pritram Marh, father-in-law of Rani, is organised.
